Further improvements to the award winning V

January 1st, 1970

I thought you would be interested to know that I was on the test with MB & Y and the "hard ride" that they refer to was experienced at a speed of approximately 26 knots in seas of around1.5m.

The MB&Y test was carried out before we had time to carry out our own full sea trial and because of the very good visibility from the helm position, the boat felt to be running reasonably level.

However since then we have carried out full measurement tests and the boat was in fact running at a bow high angle of around 6˚. The problem appears to have been due to the QL interceptor trim tabs which were not very effective at intermediate speeds between 18 and 28 knots.

Since then the boat has been re-engineered with Bennett trim tabs and the running angle can now be easily controlled at 4˚ without using more than 70% tab (even with the simulated weight of a tender on the bathing platform).

I have been out on the boat with the new trim tab set up and it is completely transformed. The lower running angle means the deeper V part of the hull penetrates the waves properly and there is now a very soft and acceptable ride into a head sea i.e. similar to our other boats around this size.

If you would like to discuss this at all please give me a call on my mobile, +44 7713 388667 but please be assured that the V48 with the correct trim tab set up is a very capable boat.

Incidentally, we did have a problem with the full height fridge tower rattling (as mentioned in the MB & Y report) and this has now been resolved.
